Barely days after the re-election of Ademola Are as President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), the newly inaugurated board has swung into action — unveiling an international friendly match between Nigeria and Ghana.
The much-anticipated encounter tagged “The Heritage Cup,” will take place at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium, Accra, rekindling one of West Africa’s fiercest rugby rivalries — the Stallions of Nigeria versus the Ghana Eagles.
According to the NRFF, the friendly marks the board’s first official engagement following last weekend’s successful elections held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
Speaking on the initiative, NRFF President Ademola Are emphasized that the match forms a key part of the federation’s broader strategy to maintain player fitness, cohesion, and international visibility.
“This match is part of our plans to keep the players engaged while we finalize modalities for the league’s kickoff,” Are explained. “Our focus is on inclusivity — ensuring that every geopolitical zone is represented and actively involved in our rugby development programs.”
Beyond the men’s game, Are reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to women’s rugby, describing it as a central pillar of NRFF’s growth agenda.
